The Avian Encounter is an innovative European artistic program for the community, created in collaboration with five independent dance groups: Next Door Project (Denmark), The Symptoms (Hungary), ZITA, a contemporary dance group (Greece), Northern Sustainable Futures (Sweden), and Asociacion Compania Danza Vinculados (Spain). The program consists of a series of activities and culminates in four simultaneous performances, linked live between the five European cities. It focuses on the concept of loss, a relevant experience in today’s world, and involves community members in educational and artistic actions. Amidst conditions of war, migration, and climate crisis, loss and its associated emotion of grief have become integral to a healthy transition. However, the contemporary way of life leaves little room for experiencing and accepting them fully.
In Greece, Iris Karayan and her creative team collaborate with the Melissa Network, a network for migrant and refugee women that promotes empowerment and active participation in society. Eleven women from the network participate in the performance, sharing their personal stories and expressing memories and emotions. Through movement, sound, and the presence of a black bird symbolizing loss, they create a living puzzle of images that alternate and intertwine. The performance will be presented at the RoEs Theater, Iakchou 16, Gazi 11854, on March 8th, 9th, and 10th, with free admission
